Indoor Flying Sites

NEWSFLASH!!! July 1, 1999

John Worth's June '99 "Cloud 9" newsletter reports a major slowfly RC breakthrough at the Lakehurst (NJ) Naval Air Station. Slowfliers can now be flown in Hangar 1 subject to the limitations listed below. Previously only free flight models were permitted and no RC emissions of any kind were allowed within the hangar.

One day each month is scheduled, but this may change in the future depending on response. The next dates are July 17, September 18, and October 16. These are all on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The building is the famous old Hangar #1, occasional host to the Hindenburg and other ships. The ceiling is over 100 feet high! Click here for more info about Hangar 1.

Details are as follows:
1. 27 MHz is the only frequency permitted. Fortunately Hitec's inexpensive but very nice 3SS system is available on 27 MHz. Also good are the analog and newer digital Twin Turbo systems.
Infrared control is permitted, but this system relies on the signal being reflected into the detector. Hangar 1 is large enough that this may not happen and IR may not work there.

I've just learned of this today. I'll find out and post details of any other "legal" 27 MHz systems.

2. Only electric and CO2 power is allowed.

3. Only slowfliers or blimps are allowed. The Navy stores some of its things in the hangar and so "park" fliers are not allowed inside. However there's also a very nice outdoor RC field on the base, 1/2 mile from Hangar 1 and you are welcome to fly there if the weather permits.

4. AMA membership is required to be allowed on the base. See the guard at the entrance for directions to Hangar 1.

My thanks to Sal Cannizzano who arranged this with the co-operation of the Navy and the AMA.

E-mail me for any questions or if you have any information to add.
