Building Hints - Hinges Building Hints - Hinges
Some people have had difficulty with their LiteStick hinges. The biggest thing to watch for is that if you use the method shown in the instructions and you press too hard with the ballpoint you can tear the skin on the hinge side.
Also, using the ballpoint as shown does not always make enough clearance to allow for the surfaces to flex freely.
The simple method shown here is both simple and pretty fool-proof. The procedure for the elevator is the same as for the rudder shown here.

The tools you will need are clear Scotch tape and a Bic pen. Pretty much any type of Scotch tape can be used here since it's really only a backup. However, the shiny stuff will work better than the "invisible" satin-finish tapes. Apply it along the hinge-line, press it down with your fingers and trim the ends flush.
You will also need a BIC Crystal pen as shown here. I've looked for other things that work as well and I haven't found any. If you have any good substitutes please let me know.

Start by lightly scoring the pre-cut groove with the tip of the pen. This is only to widen it slightly for later on. Don't go more than half-way down at this step.

Next, pass the pen cap along the length of the hinge. Use the middle of the cap and press down as hard to smoosh the foam. Be careful that you drag the tip since this might damage the skin.
When you finish the hinge will look like this and should be able to easily flex about 90 degrees to either side with very little effort. ![]()
